Presentation of the Alternative reports for the situation with the children’s rights in the Republic of Macedonia prepared by Macedonian National Alliance for Children's Rights

 

The National Alliance for Children's Rights , coordinated by the First Children’s Embassy in the World Megjashi, on Thursday, 17th of December 2009, at 10:30 am, in the facilities of the First Children’s Embassy in the World Megjashi, held a press conference to present the Alternative reports for the situation with the children’s rights in the Republic of Macedonia.



“In the last years, Republic of Macedonia has overcome many political and economic obstacles, but from the children’s rights perspective the progress is limited.... (on the contrary) the situation of the children in Macedonia is becoming in many aspects worse. Even besides the turbulent legislative reforms and writing politics, the children and their families, especially the poor children and poor families are missing out the rights of quality health care and education and the rights of inclusion and involvement...” More information about the situation with the children in Macedonia was revealed on the press conference.

Speakers on the press conference were:
MA Dragi Zmijanac – Executive Director and Founder of the First Children’s Embassy in the World Megjashi, was speaking about the recommendations from the non-governmental organizations to the Committee for the rights of the child
Keti Jandrijeska Jovanova – Attorney at law from the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, was speaking about the contents of the Alternative report for the Convention for the rights of the child
MA Dragi Zmijanac – Executive Director of the First Children’s Embassy in the World Megjashi, was speaking about the Alternative reports for the Optional protocols
Svetlana Mulqueen – Report editor from the First Children’s Embassy in the World Megjashi, was speaking about the process of preparation of the Alternative report
Moderator: Katerina Koneska – Attorney at law from First Children’s Embassy in the World Megjashi

In the period from the 23rd of December 2008 to 1st of December 2009, the Alternative reports were being prepared by the National Alliance for Children’s rights (Coalition consisted of 21 non-governmental organizations and 2 non-governmental coalitions). Four Alternative reports were made:

•Alternative Report of the nongovernmental organizations to the Second Periodical Report of the Republic of Macedonia to the Convention on Children’s Rights

•Alternative report of the non-profit organizations to the Initial Report of Republic of Macedonia after the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography
•Alternative report of the nongovernmental organizations to the Initial Report of the Republic of Macedonia under the Optional Protocol towards the Convention on Children’s Rights on involvement of children in armed conflicts
•Children’s Alternative report – made by the children

These reports will be sent to the Committee for the rights of the child of UN and will be presented by three adult representatives from the National Alliance and two children representatives on a pre-session in front of the Committee, on the beginning of February 2010, in Geneva.

The preparation of the Alternative reports is part of the project Building a culture of child participation, financed by the European Commission and UNICEF.

Alternative Report of the Non-Governmental Organizations to the State Reports About the Situation With the Rights of the Child in the Republic of Macedonia
 

The Alternative Reports of NGOs on the occasion of the Second Periodical State Report to the Convention on the Rights of the Child[1] and the initial reports on the Optional Protocols, are prepared by the National Alliance for Children's Rights - Republic of Macedonia - NACR (non-formal Alliance established in 1997) as part of a project activity of the First Children's Embassy in the World MEGJASHI. For the needs to prepare the report in 2009, this NACR was renewed and extended with new member organizations and two coalitions. 21 civil society organizations and 2 coalitions of civil society organizations took part in the process of preparation of the Alternative Reports[2].
